JFK 25, North Panola 8

The John F. Kennedy Hornets cruised past the North Panola Cougars in Mound Bayou Friday night.

The Hornets improved to 1- 1. The game was tied 8-8 at halftime. The Hornets were able to coast in the second half by outscoring the Cougars 17-0.

Dontarius Malone and Samodrian Melton led the offense as both players scored touchdowns with Malone kicking a field goal and Melton scoring a 2-point conversion. Dontrez Jordan also returned a kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

“Dontarius Malone had an outstanding game, and Samodrian Melton did a good job of running the ball,” JFK head coach Sheldon Hodge said. “They had a tremendous impact on the game. We were able to pick up some key first downs in third and long situations that were able to keep drives going. I think we had the ball longer than North Panola. The big thing was we were able to contain their wide receiver Ricky Hunt. That was a very big part of the game. The only score we gave up was a kickoff return for a touchdown.”

Linebacker Brandon McDaniels led the Hornets’ defense, followed by Demorris Bedford, Javantye Malone, Stephen Gardner, Jordan and Kirk Melvin.

JFK will host Amanda Elzy in Mound Bayou next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

NSA 44, Delta 6

The North Sunflower Academy Rebels won their first game of the season in a big way by defeating the Delta Academy Raiders in a District 1 8-man football game in Drew Friday night.

The win pushed the Rebels to 1-1. NSA led 30-6 at halftime. Austin Starnes threw a touchdown pass to Nathan Cummins, Dylan Debower, Thomas Glass and Aaron Burt rushed for touchdowns and Kevin Muzzi kicked two extra points to lead the offense. Anthony Joseph also rushed for some key yards to aid NSA.

“One of the key improvements was ball control,” NSA head coach Tom Thompson said. “Although we fumbled the ball on the first play, I just stressed to them that ball control and holding on to the ball was critical. After we got that out of our system, we didn’t have to punt not one time during the whole game. That showed we were driving the ball pretty well. Our defense played extremely well.”

The defense was led by several rebels. Ryan Wilson had an interception to give NSA one of its big plays on defense.

NSA will be off this week and will return home to take on Park Place in Drew at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10.
