Hughes pitches well for Royals in series with Indians

Kansas City Royals reliever Dusty Hughes had a good series against Cleveland this past week.

In two games against the Indians, Hughes gave up two hits but didn’t walk a batter or give up an earned run in two-thirds of an inning. Hughes hasn’t given up an earned run in his last three outings and has seen his ERA fall to 4.83. In 45 appearances, he has a 1-1 record and has given up 48 hits with 18 walks and 24 strikeouts in 41 innings of work. Hughes pitched at Delta State from 2001-03.

San Francisco Giants catcher Eli Whiteside had another tough game against the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday evening.

Whiteside went 0-for-3 in the Giants’ 5-2 victory over the Phillies. Whiteside has gone hitless in his last six games and has seen his batting average fall to .236. He is still at four home runs and 10 RBIs in 48 games. He also has five doubles and a triple. In the field, Whiteside has just two passed balls and has committed just two errors in 321 total chances for a fielding percentage of .994. Whiteside played at Delta State from 1999-2001.

In triple-A action, Round Rock Express shortstop Edwin Maysonet has been on a cold streak as he is 3-for-20 over his last five games. Maysonet’s batting average has dipped to .242. In 70 games, he has a home run with 30 RBIs. He also has 11 doubles and two triples with 25 runs. On defense, Maysonet has made just three errors. Round Rock is an affiliate of the Houston Astros organization. Maysonet played at Delta State in 2002 and 03.

In double-A action, Chattanooga Lookouts starting pitcher Brent Leach hasn’t pitched a game since Aug. 12, but he was scheduled to start Saturday against Montgomery. Before Saturday’s start, Leach was 5-3 with a 5.71 ERA in 11 starts. He gave up 60 hits with 24 walks and 43 strikeouts in 52 innings of work. Chattanooga is an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Leach pitched at Delta State in 2005.

In single-A action, Kane County pitcher Kenny Smalley has pitched since Aug. 12. He is 0-1 with a 7.07 ERA for the Cougars. He has given up 16 hits with 12 walks and 12 strikeouts in 14 innings of work. Kane County is an affiliate of the Oakland A’s organization. Smalley played at Delta State in 2008.

Quad Cities River Bandits’ second baseman Devin Goodwin has started to hit better again. Goodwin has gone 8-for-22 in his last six games. Goodwin’s average has gone back up to .255 with five home runs and 29 RBIs in 49 games. He also has nine doubles and two triples to go with 38 runs. Goodwin has struggled in the field by making 11 errors. Quad Cities is an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Goodwin played at DSU from 2006-09.
