This morning, the Mississippi Department of Education released the scores from the 2009-2010 state tests.

Across Bolivar County, most school districts are pleased with their results, though all are working hard to make more improvements during this school year.

"I thought we did very well," said Benoit School District Superintendent Dr. Beverly Culley. "We made a lot of improvements.

"Teachers and students did a lot of work to improve our test scores and to ensure our students are properly prepared," she continued. "We had great leadership.

"I feel we did well, but we're pushing harder for better (this year)," Culley said.

Cleveland School District officials were in a meeting as of presstime and were unavailable to make comments on the district's scores.

However, raw data test scores for the district seem positive.

In Mound Bayou, overall scores were good.

"We moved up, from a district standpoint, from academic watch last year to a successful school district for this school term," said Mound Bayou Superintendent William Crockett. "Our QDI average was 138, which put us in the successful range.

"We are proud of our students and we congratulate our staff for the hard work and efforts they put into making sure our students achieved at the level they did," Crockett said, noting the district's goal is to be a Star School. "We just have to work harder to reach that particular (Star School) level."

North Bolivar School District officials have had a positive year as well.

"We made improvements across the board," said North Bolivar School District Superintendent Dr. Ronzy Humphrey. "We were very focused for this year."

In the August school board meeting, Ellis announced that he expected the district to be declared successful for the 2009-2010 school year.

The Shaw School District also received scores for the 2009-2010 school year.

"If you look at the data, the data will suggest that, as a district, the Shaw School District did perform better than last year," said Shaw Superintendent Cederick Ellis. "As a district, we're moving. We still have a lot of work to do at our elementary school.

"The scores somewhat resemble what they did last year, so we have additional work to do," he continued. "We are confident that this is the school year that our scores at McEvans will not resemble what they have in the past and what they currently resemble.

"If you look at scores for the high school, the scores are better than they were last year," said Ellis. "We have more students scoring in the proficient and advanced categories than we did last year.

"We know that the things we have put in place will move them (the scores) from where (they are) now to somewhere else and next year, our scores will be dramatically different and be in a positive direction," said Ellis. "We are very excited that we did see, as a district, our scores increase over all."

West Bolivar officials were unavailable for comment as of presstime.

The Mississippi Department of Education will release complete district QDI's and accountability labels in September.
