There will be a “Race for the Cure” 5K walk/run benefit for Lois Rash at 8 a.m. Saturday at United Family Life Center in Cleveland.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Jarvis Reed, oncologist. There is an entrance fee of $25.

Lois Rash is the wife of Rev. Sammie Rash, pastor of United Baptist Church in Cleveland.

After finding out her mother-in-law had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Theresa Rash decided to organize a benefit event that coordinates with something Lois Rash is truly passionate about, healthy living.

“There will be a free health and fitness assessment at 7 a.m.,” said Theresa Rash. “We are collaborating with Dr. Larry Proctor and his wife Kimberly Proctor. Dr. Proctor is the owner of a company called Beam, LLC.

“Then at 8 a.m., we’ll start the run,” said Theresa Rash. “After the run, Dr. Reed will speak at 9 a.m. After his speech we will give out award to male and female participants according to their age group.

“Then after that, Dr. Proctor will host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for girls and boys and males and females of all ages,” she said.

Theresa Rash said the benefit is being held to bring awareness about pancreatic cancer and other cancers as well.

“Mrs. Rash is like a mother to me,” said Theresa Rash. “I love her with all of my heart and she loves me as if I was her own daughter. I’ve been a part of their family for 19 years.

“She and I have the kind of relationship a mother and a daughter have,” she said. “She’s never changing. Tears come to my eye just talking about her. Both she and Mr. Rash are very special to me. Mr. Rash is like my father. That’s my right-hand man.

“I want to do this to bring awareness to our community about how important it is to live a healthy life,” said Theresa Rash. “Before Mrs. Rash got sick, she walked five days a week.”

Theresa Rash said she hopes the event is a success and that she looks forward to see everyone come out and get some very important information.
