During Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Jackie Thigpen said, “School started on Thursday and according to the preliminary enrollment data the district has approximately 3,649 students for this year.”
Thigpen said the district ended last year with approximately 3,491 students.
She added the numbers are not official and a more accurate enrollment total will be ready later next week.
Thigpen also said the figure will be more accurate after the no show count is included. However based on the preliminary figure, enrollment is up in the Cleveland School District.
“We are still working to make sure our classes don’t exceed the state limits because students are still enrolling,” said Thigpen.
In other cabinet news, Thigpen said, “We are still working on bus routes but everybody is getting to school and from school.”
Secondary Curriculum/Testing Coordinator Joy Spain reported that the district has received testing data from the Mississippi Department of Education.
Spain said the data is still under embargo and is expected to be released Aug. 20 or Aug. 21.
She also said the GED program is up and going.
“I would like to thank all of you (members of the board) for the job that you do and thank you for being patient with us as school starts,” said Spain.
Elementary Curriculum/Federal Programs Coordinator Brenda Ellis reported that the district has received its final allocations for Title I and Title II funds.
Maintenance Director Gerald Finely reported desks donated to the Shaw School District had been received. Finely also reported that his department would be working on grass cutting at all campuses.
Finely also reported, “The temporary chiller for D.M. Smith (Middle School) has arrived and had been installed. We’ve gotten several calls about the air-conditioning on different campuses.”
Finely said of the 34 calls they have received from campuses all but five have been worked out and of those five three of them could not be worked out through the maintenance department.
