Preliminary results from Tuesday’s special election in Shaw are in.

“It’s not official yet,” said City Clerk Edna Beverly.

According to the clerk, city officials are still waiting on affidavit ballots to be counted before declaring a winner.

Though the election results are still in a preliminary phase, Mayor Willie Mae Johnson did announce the unofficial results.

Terry Collins received 137 votes and Bill Williams received 62.

Affidavit ballots may yield different results.

City officials did not release the number of affidavit ballots still waiting to be counted.

The special election was announced two months ago with a public notice.

One seat on the five person governing board came available at the beginning of June.

Shaw residents arrived at city hall for the regularly scheduled aldermen meeting in June to find the board one member short.

Shortly after the meeting was called to order, Johnson announced that Alderperson Chandrina “Chanise” Perry had submitted a letter of resignation.

At the suggestion of Board Attorney Willie Griffin, the matter was moved up from the resignations section of the agenda to one of the first points brought before the board.

"I think we need to go ahead and do the resignation," said Griffin at the June meeting.

"In your packs, I believe you have a letter from one of your alderpersons, Chanise Perry," Mayor Willie Mae Johnson said in June.

The remaining board members Roger Dale Carter, Charlie Jackson, Johnny Canonici and Henry Alexander voted unanimously to accept her resignation with little discussion.

Perry spent 11 months on the board before tendering her resignation.

She was elected last June and took her seat in July.

No reason for her resignation was presented to the public during the June 2010 board meeting.

Perry came under some scrutiny this past spring when she was arrested at Parchman State Penitentiary for having contraband cell phones in the facility.

The matter was never discussed in open session of the Shaw Board of Aldermen.

The new member of the board is expected to take seat in September.

Shaw will once again have a full city board made up of five members.
