H.M. Nailor Elementary School’s former principal has received the final decision about his employment with the Cleveland School District.

The Cleveland School District Board of Trustees voted 4-1 not to renew the contract of former principal Lester Fisher for the 2010-2011 school year.

Trustees Maurice Lucas, Richard Boggs, George Evans and Todd Fuller all voted not to renew Fisher’s contract. Board President Harvey Jackson was the only member of the board that voted to renew Nailor’s former principal’s contract.

Fisher had served in the capacity of a teacher and principal in the district. He began his career at Margaret Green Junior High School as a substitute teacher.

During Fisher closing statements for his public hearing at the July 20 board meeting, he said, “I have worked with five different superintendents and I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve enjoyed working with the current superintendent as well and can continue to work with the current superintendent.

“I ask that in making your decision that you be fair, unprejudiced and unbais,” said Fisher. “I trust and believe that you all are going to be fair.”

Superintendent Jackie Thigpen recommended that the members of the board not renew Fisher’s contract for several reasons.

Fisher contested the nonrenewal of his contract for various reasons, which included his prior evaluations showing no indication that his performance was lacking, inconsistency in certain documentation and several other factors that for Fisher sparked alarm.
