The Cleveland School District superintendent presented the board of trustees with her cabinet update during Tuesday’s meeting.

“Registration will begin next week on July 26-28 for the 2010-2011 school year,” said Dr. Jackie Thigpen.

Registration for all elementary and secondary school students will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 2-6 p.m. The parent/legal guardian must register at the school the student will attend for the upcoming school year.

Parents/legal guardians will need to present two items verifying proof of residence. Post office box numbers are not acceptable. They will also need their social security number for the student.

Entering kindergarten students must have a certified copy of their birth certificate, social security number, immunization compliance form number 121 that may be obtained from a doctor or local health department. For students entering the Cleveland School District for the first time, the above information is required also.

The first day of school for students is Aug. 5. All secondary schools will begin classes at 7:50 a.m. with the school day ending at 3:10 p.m. All elementary schools in the district will follow the 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule.

“New teacher orientation will be held on July 29 at the Walter C. Robinson Achievement Center,” said Thigpen. “On Aug. 2, all teachers will report to work.

“We are continuously preparing our facilities,” she said. “Over the weekend (H.M.) Nailor (Elementary School) hosted a clean up day,” she said. “It was a great success.

“They were able to get the cafeteria painted, restrooms, teacher’s lounge and all the teachers have been moved to their areas,” said Thigpen.

“They seemed to be having a lot of fun,” said Board Trustee Richard Boggs, one of the members of the board that attended the clean up day.

“We would like to thank all the board members that came out to assist us in our efforts,” said Thigpen.

Thigpen announced to the board that she would be traveling to Jackson to attend a meeting with the “Heritage and Archives Department in Jackson.” She said representatives would be discussing information on Nailor.

In other cabinet update news, Thigpen gave notice to the board that all teachers for the district had been hired with the exception of a high school science teacher.

“Other than that all staff have been hired,” she said. “I would also like the board to note that we have reduced the number of our certified staff from the number we had last year.”

The next meeting of the Cleveland School District Board of Trustees will be held on Aug. 9.
