Hugh Woodie Hammond, 83, of Greenville died Friday, July 16, 2010 at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Greenville Cemetery under the direction of Boone-Wells Funeral Home.

The visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. Monday at the church before the funeral service.

Mr. Hammond was born in Clarksdale and graduated from Greenville High School in 1944. He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army serving during World War II. After his discharge, he worked for 32 years at Delta and Pine Land Company in Scott. Later, he worked and retired from Comet Rice/Perma Delta as a purchasing agent. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a former member of Benoit Union Church (Methodist). He was a member of Benoit Lions Club, Ducks Unlimited, a charter member of Benoit Outing Club and was a developer and longtime member and past president of Catfish Point Hunting Club, member of Huntington Point Hunting Club, the VFW, Masonic Lodge (Shriner) and The American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Vernon Hammond Jr.; his first wife, Alice “Lou” Wright Hammond and a son, Woodie Hammond Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Martha Hammond of Greenville; three daughters, Deborah “Debbie” Hammond Bailey (Mike) of Benoit, Melanie Hammond Hall (Steve) of Cleveland and Margaret “Meg” Hammond Clemons (Gene) of French Settlement, La.; three step-children, John Ross Underwood (Cyndi) of Leland, Lee Underwood (Candi) of Arcola and Ann McClendon (Joe) of Hernando; 11 grandchildren, Trey Hammond, Amy Bailey Harmon (Scotty), Mickey Bailey (Micki), Alicia Bailey Spencer (Curt), Amanda Clemons, Kristy Clemons Matherne, Lisa Hall, Allison Hall, Kimberly Clemons, Amber Hammond Holley and Kasey Hammond; 13 great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson.
