1 dies in highway accident

On Saturday at 2:14 a.m. Mississippi Highway Patrol Troopers, along with Sunflower County Fire Rescue officials, were dispatched to an accident on Miss. Highway 8 near Dockery.

According to MHP Public Affairs Officers Tony Dunn, vehicle one, a 1990 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Ben Williams, 40, from Cleveland, was traveling west on Miss. Highway 8.

He said vehicle two, a 2005 Chrysler Sebring driven by Corey Triplett, 21, of Moorhead, was traveling east on Miss. Highway 8 when he traveled into the westbound lane of traffic colliding head on with vehicle one.

Williams and a passenger Micah Martin of Cleveland were air lifted to The Med in Memphis, both with serious injuries.

As of this Monday morning, Williams was scheduled to be released but Martin was still in critical status.

The driver of vehicle two Triplett was taken to Bolivar Medical Center and then transferred the same day to UMC Medical Center. It was reported that prior to him being transferred to UMC he was in stable condition with a severe hip injury.

His passenger Lora Westbrook, 19, of Indianola, who had to be extricated from the vehicle died at the scene as a result of injuries she sustain in the accident.

A separate accident occurred in the same location as a result of the above accident a 2001 Suzuki Vitara driven by Justin Burton from Sunflower was also traveling west on Miss. Highway 8 and collided with vehicle one that was in the roadway due to the first accident.

Burton had to air lifted as well the The Med with moderate injuries.

Dunn reported there was no update on his condition.

The accident is sill under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
