Lisa Cooley, director of Team Cleveland/Main Street for the Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce, said Memphis Barbecue is putting on the event, but the chamber is helping out.
“There will be up to 15 teams,” said Cooley. “It’s a two-day event, and they will each work with a professional.”
The camp will take place in downtown Cleveland on South Bayou Street.
According to the Facebook page for the Memphis Barbecue Network (MBN) BBQ Boot Camp, contestants will learn contest preparation, how to select the best meats, how professionals prepare and cook championship ribs and shoulders, time and temperature management, how to use the best flavor profiles, blind box preparation, how to do their best presentation for judges, what judges are looking for and how to interpret their scores.
Participants will also be paired with professionals from the competition barbecue circuit for classroom and on-site training, and contestants will be judged.
Cooley said they are still accepting applications.
Those who are interested can download the application form from the MBN Boot Camp Facebook page.
Cooley said it costs $80 per person to be on a team, but the event is capped at 15 teams. However, Cooley said up to four people are allowed to be on a team.
