With the help of Monsanto, The Vineyard New Outreach Ministry is working to help eliminate hunger in rural areas.
Monsanto recently awarded Vineyard a $5,000 grant to help with a mobile food pantry project.
"This is something that Monsanto does every year to support the communities around them. The organization plans to use the grant towards the Rural Hunger Program. This program is going to provide hunger relief for individuals who live in areas where grocery stores or other sources of food may not be within a specific range," said Sharee Silerio, spokesperson for Monsanto.
Arica Addison, Director of The Vineyard New Outreach Ministry said Monsanto has been generously aided the organization for a number of years.
"They have been partnering with us for the last four years. We appreciate them. Most of our funds come from fundraisers and we do have a few sponsors but Monsanto sponsors us every year. They really help us to keep the program going," said Addison.
The Monsanto Fund works to substantially and meaningfully improve people's lives around the world.
The organization supports communities in which Monsanto employees live and work by investing in programs across rural America.
Addison said Monsanto has helped them to reach out to underserved areas in the Mississippi Delta.
"We primarily service rural areas in the Delta but occasionally we do go outside of the Delta if we find a need. Our organization links up with other organizations such as churches and community leaders to provide assistance to individuals in need. We basically go out and distribute food boxes. We usually pass out about 300 at a time,' she added.
Even though America’s farmers are among the most productive and efficient in the world, hunger is still a significant problem in America.
Nearly 15 percent of all rural households are regularly without food – that’s around 3 million households in the very communities where much of the world’s food supply is raised.
In addition, one out of every six people goes hungry regularly in the United States.
"We were prompted to do have a mobile food pantry after we realized that there were so many underserved areas in the Delta. We would serve food to people at regular food pantries and then we realized that we were only serving the same people over and over again. We wanted to reach out," continued Addison.
"When we go out into the community with the mobile food pantry, the entire community comes out and supports our efforts by assisting in food distribution," she added.
The mission of The Vineyard New Outreach Ministry is to build stronger, healthier families by providing supportive services to families that enable and encourage self- sufficiency and community participation.
The Vineyard New Outreach Ministry is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, located in Greenville that distributes food, clothing and other necessities to individuals, children and families that lack these essentials due to, poverty, homelessness, no/limited income, layoffs, disabilities, domestic violence, or any other adverse situation.
The organization works closely with caring people that donate time, services, food, money, clothes, hygiene products and other supplies.
"We have been doing this since 2011. We tend to focus on the needs of elderly and disabled individuals. In a sense, our efforts help to bring the community together," said Addison.
More than 70 Monsanto sites have pledged to volunteer at local food banks and assist their communities in feeding the hungry.
Monsanto is a consistent supporter of America’s farmers and addressing the nation’s hunger problem. For the past three years, the company has held dedicated food drives to support area food banks during the Farm Progress and Husker Harvest Day shows.
These food drives have generated approximately 80,000 pounds of food for families in need. In addition, through Monsanto’s America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, Monsanto has provided farmer recipients with more than $300,000 that has gone towards more than 120 food banks and food pantries within rural communities.
