The Cleveland West 9-year-old All-Stars won the Dixie Youth 9-year-old District 1 Baseball Tournament, while the Cleveland West 10-year-old All-Stars won the Dixie Youth 10-year-old District 1 Baseball Tournament.
In the 9-year-old tournament, Cleveland West defeated Cleveland East 10-5 and turned around and defeated Washington Co. 16-13 in a barnburner for the championship.
Cleveland West actually trailed 3-0 after the first inning to Washington and then again 10-9. The Cleveland 9-year-olds battled hard with every pitch and every at-bat to end the night with the district title in their possession.
“I was so proud,” Cleveland West head coach John Cox said. “They just played so hard. That’s a group of kids that until a couple of weeks ago had never played together. That Washington County team was good. Our kids came back, and you can tell they enjoyed playing.”
Jake Smith, Colin Russell and Patrick Hayze Bramuchi anchored the pitching through the whole tournament. The entire team contributed in some capacity in the title game against Washington County. Cleveland went 3-0 in the tournament.
In the 10-year-old tournament, the Cleveland West 10s defeated Washington County A 8-5 and ran over Indianola in the title game 16-1.
“I think our pitching in the end helped out,” Cleveland West 10s head coach Jason Harris said. “In the first game, we were down 3-0. We bounced back and got a lead and held on to it. The kids were fired up for the second game and stayed fired up.”
Parker Harris, Jack Cartwright and Jacob Henley pitched in the first game, while Spencer Horton pitched in the finale against Indianola. The offense for Cleveland West was a total team effort.
Cleveland West posted a perfect 5-0 record in the tournament by outscoring is opponents 62-30.
The Cleveland West 9s will advance to the 9-year-old State Tournament in Magee, which will start on Friday. The Cleveland West 10 s will advance to the AAA (10-year-old) State Tournament in Mendenhall and will take on the St. Martin All-Stars on July 18.
