Tuesday Mississippi Highway Patrol, Pafford, Fire Rescue and MDOT responded to a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 61 north of Shaw.

According to Tony Dunn, Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper, "Vehicle one, a 2005 International MDOT work truck, driven by 50-year-old Henry Butler from Rosedale, was traveling north on U.S. 61 following behind a work crew as they made repairs to the highway."

Dunn said a second vehicle, a 2006 Freightliner towing an excavator driven by Lonnie Wilkerson Jr., 39, of Leland was also traveling north on 61 when it collided the front of his truck with the rear of the MDOT work truck.

"After impact, both vehicles caught fire and ended up in the middle median. The driver of vehicle one and MDOT employee Mr. Butler died at the scene due to injuries he sustained. A passenger in vehicle two was identified as 16-year-old Peyton Wilkerson, the son of driver two, and whom witnesses stated pulled his father from their burning vehicle saving his life. Both were transported by ambulance to Bolivar County Medical Center with moderate injuries," said Dunn.

The accident is under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations Accident Reconstruction Team.
