Progress has been the story for the Delta State University Statesmen on the golf course.

Tournament after tournament, the Statesmen finished in a higher position each week. In the Gulf South Conference Golf Tournament, the Statesmen were in first place after the first two rounds and ended up finishing in a tie for second with North Alabama with a 290.

The performance at the GSC Tournament was good enough for DSU as the team will now put its focus on the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional Golf Tournament beginning on Monday and lasting through Wednesday at the Savannah Golf Club in Pooler, Ga. The tournament will feature 20 teams. The last time Delta State made it to the region as a team was in 2009.

“We had a lot of new players in the beginning, and they’re really working good together,” Delta State head golf coach Sam Dunning said. “Actually, we had a different five players in 10 different tournaments. It wasn’t by design, but that’s just the way it happened. It look likes the final tournament is when the five that played together for the first time seemed to really work, especially when they were shooting 10 under in the second round at Tunica National in the conference tournament. That made a big statement on how they can play.”

The golfers that will be representing DSU in the regional will be Reed Lindsey (sophomore), Zach Pritchard (freshmen), Cameron Thomas (senior), Chad Couples (junior) and Brad Thornton (junior). Lindsey finished third in the GSC Tourney with a 208.

“The leadership seems to be good,” Dunning said. “They lead by example. We have a majority of our players coming back, so this will be a good starting point for the players that will be back for the next year with the experience, no matter how they do.”

The top seven from the regional will advance to the NCAA Division II National Golf Tournament in Allendale, Mich.
