Hospital CEO tauts accomplishments

Bolivar Medical Center Interim CEO James Atkins stressed in a meeting with The Bolivar Commercial that the hospital strives to make continuous quality and safety improvements and hospital officials are proud of their accomplishments and record.

Recently the hospital was given a low safety ranking by “Consumer Reports,” but Atkins said the numbers used in the article are old and there have been a great deal of changes and new regulations put into effect.

The article published by “Consumer Reports” gave BMC an 11 in safety. The same article ranked Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville only a few slots higher.

What the article did not include was that the information used to create the rankings was several years old, some from the year 2009.

Since 2010, Bolivar Medical Center has been recognized by The Joint Commission as a "Top Performer" in key quality measures and special recognition in heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care.

"We don't want to be judged by the things in the past … this article was not an accurate picture at all of Bolivar Medical Center," said Atkins.

Atkins shared the BMC's quality report released by the Joint Commission, which showed that compared to other Joint Commission accredited organizations, the hospital met 2011 national patient safety goals and has done so since.

The most recent onsite survey of the hospital was in February of this year.

The hospital is accredited for three components, behavioral health care, the hospital, and laboratory accreditation program.

In regards to national quality improvement goals for 2012-2013 BMC was in the target range for heart failure care nationwide, and colon/large intestine surgery nationwide, and performed above the target range in pneumonia care, infection prevention, hysterectomy, and knee replacement.

In regards to safety patient goals the hospital met all National Patient Safety Goals.

Atkins also pointed out there were several key quality improvements not reflecting by "Consumer Reports" ranking.

Mortality rates are down 42 percent, readmissions are down 9 percent, which Atkins pointed out it is an area they are working hard to succeed in, central line blood stream associated infections are down 100 percent, catheter associated urinary tract infections are down 100 perfect, inappropriate use of chest scanning (too many scans or unnecessary scans) is down 100 percent, surgical site infections are down 50 perfect, and communicating with patients after they have been discharged is up 4 percent.

“We challenge our hospital to go above the standard…we are very focused on these measures … this hospital is not what that article said," said Atkins.

With the Bolivar Medical Center recognized as a top performer for the last three years in a row, Atkins hopes and plans for the hospital to continue to improve.

According to his presentation and data, "Our quality program has reduced patient harms, reduced readmissions, improved mortality, and enhanced patient experiences," he explained.
