The East Side Trojanettes and the Ruleville Central Lady Tigers survived the first round of the 3A North Half Girls Playoffs Monday.

The Trojanettes defeated the Kemper County 46-37 at the D.M. Smith Gymnasium on the campus of East Side High School, while Ruleville Central edged out South Pontotoc 45-42 at Pontotoc.

In the East Side-Kemper County game, East Side held a slim 21-20 lead at halftime. East Side senior Carvacier Sanders showed true leadership as she scored all 12 of her points in the fourth quarter. Keisha Cotton also had another double-double by scoring 15 points with 12 rebounds.

“I was excited the girls were able to preserve through some ups and downs through out the course of the game and finish up with the win,” Cotton said. “They played pretty good defense, and we hit some shots. Carvarcier Sanders did a really good job in the fourth quarter.”

In the Ruleville Central-South Pontotoc game, Ruleville led 20-17 at halftime. The defense for the Lady Tigers played well in key moments as South Pontotoc had a tough time hitting shots when it counted.

“They (South Pontotoc) were some pretty quick shooters, so we had to get out and get in their face,” Ruleville Central head coach Chiquita Bracey said. “They struggled offensively from our defense. We got to rattle them on their shots, and our defense did a good job.”

The Lady Tigers also got a good game from Robrieka Finn as she scored 19 points to lead the team. Shakira Singleton aided Ruleville with 10 points.

Ruleville Central (19-9) will play the winner of Holly Springs-Alcorn Central, while East Side (21-6) play Kossuth in Booneville in the quarterfinal round of the 3A North Half Playoffs in Booneville. Ruleville is scheduled to play at 5:30 p.m., while East Side is set to play at 7 p.m.
