While snow days are fun and can be a great break from school and work, those snow days will have to be made up and the Cleveland School District has decided on those dates.

According to Cleveland School District Superintendent Jackie Thigpen, one of those dates will be April 21.

“June 4 will be the students last day. June 5 will be the teachers last day,” she said. “The state requires 180 days for students and 187 for teachers. If a day is missed due to inclement weather, the leadership team meets and makes suggestions. The principals are polled and the majority vote gets chosen for make-up days. The Monday after Easter is always the first day that is chosen as a make-up day."

When asked how the decision is made in regards to whether or not there will be a snow day, Thigpen said, "Student safety is the first concern. If the students cannot be transported to school safely, then school is closed. The transportation director and Mr. Bill Quinton, Emergency Management Agent, provide the information necessary to make an informed decision."

To notify parents, teachers, and staff there is a snow day, Thigpen said she uses several outlets.

"Both the television and radio stations are notified. Each school has the capacity to send messages via telephone," she explained.
