Gunnison elections were planned for Tuesday to fill Alderman Demorris Raymond's position.
To become a qualified candidate a person must have the signature of 15 registered voters, however the two candidates running against Hopson did not qualify because several of the signatures were from people not on the voter roll.
Hopson, a life-long resident of Gunnison, said he is very concerned about the community, especially the water system and streets.
“I also want to help get grants and law enforcement for the town,” he said.
Hopson is very active in the community and belongs to several organizations. He is a Shriner, 32nd degree Mason and Master Mason.
"The job description of a town alderman-at-large is similar to that of a councilman. The alderman will serve on the board. Decisions are made in regards to city funds and how they are used, as well as creating city ordinances. The alderman at large represents citizens of the entire city," said Gunnison City Clerk Marquita Payne.
Hopson will be on the board until June 2016.
"I feel great. We will have a lot of ceremonies this evening that I'm looking forward too," said Hopson.
