According to Ruleville Police Chief Ernie Scarber, Ruleville Central High School received a bomb threat around 10:30 a.m.
"We are still investigating the situation. Any person who calls and makes a false bomb threat could be charged with a federal offense," said Scarber.
Although the high school received the threat, the elementary school also took precautionary measures and evacuated students to a safe location.
"We are adjacent to the high school and we decided to take the necessary precautions. We do drills to prepare students on a regular basis — there were not any serious problems on yesterday and our students knew what to do," said Ruleville Central Elementary Principal Katherine Barber.
"Everything went smoothly," she added.
According to Scarber, 318 students were evacuated and preceded promptly to New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, which is located 1,000 feet away from the school.
"The church is part of our crisis management plan. We use the church as a central location and at the beginning of the year we made sure that parents knew that in case of an emergency, children could be picked up from this location," she said.
Barber said she is very disappointed that someone would endanger the lives of the students.
"When people do things like this they fail to consider how many lives are affected as a result of a threat such as this. We are a struggling district and instructional time is vital," said Barber.
"An event such as this interrupts the educational process and it interrupts parents because they have to leave work and come to pick up their children," she added.
Barber said that she and her teachers tried to keep the children as calm as possible during the entire procedure.
"We did not allow the children to really know what was going on because we did not want to upset them," she added.
"I had one teacher to tell the students that we were just having a drill because we wanted to see how quickly their parents would come pick them up and that kind of kept them calm," continued Barber.
Barber said that she is very proud of how teachers and parents responded to the situation and she wants the minds of her teachers and students to be at ease.
Ruleville Central High School did not wish to comment on the matter.
