Both East Side squads came out on a mission and did what they needed to do as they won both games over the Region 3-3A foes.
The last meeting between the girls teams came down to the wire with East Side winning at the buzzer in Ruleville, but this time the Trojanettes came out clicking on all cylinders and disposed of the Lady Tigers 63-48.
The Trojanettes improved to 14-6 with a 5-1 mark in region play. Ruleville fell to 14-7 overall with a 4-2 mark in the region.
In the boys game, the Trojans handled the Tigers from the opening tip as they blew past them 68-50. East Side improved to 17-4 overall with a 5-1 mark in region play. Ruleville fell to 7-10 overall with a 2-4 mark in the region.
In the girls game, it was all East Side as the team jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Alex Bailey came off the bench to score five points, Keisha Cotton scored a basket and senior Carvacier Sanders scored eight consecutive points to close out the quarter to give the Trojanettes a 30-15 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Trojanettes were able to push their lead to 46-28.
In the fourth quarter the Lady Tigers made a push to get back in the game behind the sharp shooting of Rodshequia Walls who went 4-of-4 from the three point line in the quarter. Valencia DeJesus knocked down a three in the fourth as well to help out the Lady Tigers' cause.
Walls fourth three point shot close the gap to 54-43, but that would be as close as the Lady Tigers could get as the Trojanettes outscored them 9-5 down the stretch.
Cotton led East Side with 18 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks and three assists. Sanders scored 11 points with seven rebounds, Shammia Love scored 10 points with seven assists, Markquiana Henry scored nine points and Jonqueala Harris chipped in with eight points.
Walls led Ruleville with 12 points, followed by Shakira Singleton, DeJesus and Tataeana Collins with eight points each.
In the boys game, it was East Side's Charles Jackson that took control early as he scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the first half. Jackson was 3-of-4 from the three-point line in the second quarter. The Trojans’ defense in that quarter was phenomenal as they forced five consecutive turnovers from the Tigers. The biggest turnover came mid-way through the quarter as Leon Green stole a ball at half court and then raced down court for a thunderous slam-dunk on a Ruleville defender that sent shockwaves through the gym.
That play gave the Trojans even more intensity as they ended the half leading 40-19.
The Trojans kept the pedal to the metal as they increased their defensive pressure throughout the second half and never looked back.
Joining Jackson was John Paul Davis with 16 points, while Bobby Jones, Jr. and Barron Burns added 10 points each.
Kondarrius Phillips led Ruleville with 10 points, followed by Javarious Pittman with nine points and Tavoris Foster with eight points.
East Side will host J.J. McClain Friday. Ruleville will be back in action on Feb. 4 at home against Humphreys County.
