Feet will be pounding the pavement for a cause at 8 a.m. Feb. 8.

The Phi Phi Chapter of Tri Delta at Delta State is hosting its annual 5k for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the theme this year is Happy Birthday St. Jude.

Participants are welcome and encouraged to dress up in costumes.

Madison Allred, philanthropy chair for the chapter, said there are many aspects of the event she is looking forward to.

"It's hard to pick just one thing I'm excited about. With this being my first event to ever plan I'm excited to see not only mine but my chapter’s hard work pay off. I'm also excited to see all the outfits some people might run in," said Allred.

All participants will be running or walking around the famous Delta State “Green Mile” and are asked to arrive no later than 7:30 a.m. to warm-up and register.

There will be a bottle of water and a snack bar provided for all participants after the race along with a free T-shirt.

The registration fee is $20 for students, $25 for early registration, and $30 day-of. Participants can pay in cash or with a check.

There will be one male and one female winner; each winner will receive a “Swag Bag” donated by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

"Our goal for St. Jude fundraising is $40,000. Which is the most the Phi Phi chapter will have ever raised," said Allred.

Tri Delta adopted St. Jude as its national philanthropy in 1999 and as of July 2010, Tri Delta members around the country had raised nearly $16 million for the children of St. Jude.

Tri Delta's current goal is to raise $15 million in five years to name the Specialty Clinic located in the Patient Care Center at St. Jude.

It costs $1.9 million a day to operate St. Jude and public donations provide more than 75 percent of the hospital's funding. No family every pays St. Jude for anything.

Allred said she is looking forward to the many fundraisers and activities that the chapter will be doing with St. Jude this year.

"The thing I'm most excited about is probably getting to work with St. Jude on more of a hands on level. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has always had a special place in my heart. I'm not only honored, but privileged, that my sister nominated me for philanthropy chairman," she said.

Allred said it's not necessary to participate in the 5k to help St. Jude and Tri Delta welcomes donations of any size.

"If someone decides they would rather walk or jog that is perfect fine, they can enjoy the beauty of the Delta State campus. Another way to help is by going to and clicking on the donate now, but if they'd rather by-pass technology they could simply write a check out to our chapter and we will send it in along with all the money we raise from the 5K," she said.
