Friends of the Bolivar County Library System are gearing up to host their fourth annual “Grape Expectations” Benefit Gala.

The event is set to take place at the Robinson Carpenter Memorial Library in Cleveland on January 31, from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at any of the eight libraries in Bolivar County.

Tickets will also be available for purchase the night of the gala.

“People look forward to this event every year – it kind of like a big party,” said Lynn Shurden, friend of the Bolivar County Library System.

Attendees will be musically entertained by Danny Abraham and Alfonso Sanders while sipping fine wines and munching on hors d’oeuvres.

Shurden said that the event is named after the awarding winning novel “Great Expectations” and each year, the library system has been able to raises over $20,000.

“Last year, we had over 100 people to attend the gala and this year we expect to have an even bigger turnout,” she continued.

Proceeds from the gala are used to purchase items for libraries throughout the county and to promote educational programs for children during the summer.

“The library system did receive a grant but it was just not enough to purchase some much needed items. The Cleveland library recently purchased a new circulation desk and we were able to refurbish the old one – we placed it in the library in Shelby,” added Shurden.

The proceeds from last year’s event were used to purchase computers, electronic books, and handmade bookshelves.

Shurden said that in the past, the library system has explored a large number of fundraising venues but the gala has been the most successful.

“We use to host a lot of fundraisers and one day we decided to attend a fundraising workshop and that is when we came up with the idea for the gala. We thought that it would be a fun and great way to raise money,” she added.

Shurden said that the first year that the event was hosted, an auction was held but they did not raise a large amount of money; therefore, friends of the library system changed things up a bit by conducting a wine pull.

Friends are asking that individuals who desire to donate wine, to bring the wine in advance and the purchase can be used as tax exemption.

Donation forms are available at Cecil’s Package Store, Lee Street Package Store and Ware Wine and Spirits.

There is no specific attire for this event and according to Shurden children are welcomed to come as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

“The event is opened to the public. We just want people to come out and have a nice time while supporting the Bolivar County Library System, “added Shurden.
