Today is the deadline for all qualifying candidates for the new state mandated school board elections.

According to Marilyn Kelly, circuit clerk, Richard Boggs is the only qualifying candidate in Cleveland Sub-District 3.

"Today is the deadline for qualifying candidates, we hope that candidates can get their information by 5 p.m.," said Kelly.

"We encourage candidates to get their information in as soon as possible. We have quite a few applications, we're just trying to get them approved," added Kelly.

According to legislative action, Bolivar County will be combining school districts with new boards. Cleveland School District was not included in the mandate.

Any school board member of the former school district residing in the proper election district is eligible for election to new board of trustees.

A candidate must submit two items to the clerk's office and a filing fee of $10 by 5 p.m., which is at least 60 days prior to the primary election.

Also a candidate must submit a written Statement of Intent containing the name and address of the candidate, the name of the party with which the candidate is affiliated, and the office the candidate is seeking.

The circuit clerk must forward the Statement of Intent and the filing fee to the secretary of the proper Executive Committee.

The candidate must complete a petition that must be signed by at least 50 qualified voters of a municipality or ward, if the municipality or ward has a population of 1,000 residents.

The clerk must certify that the signatures are those of registered voters.
