The Statesmen gave lots of effort on the first day in the Delta heat and Head Coach Todd Cooley said he saw plenty of things his team did well.
“I thought the intensity was there,” Cooley said. “I thought that we really, really hard. I appreciated the tempo that they came out. The challenge is can we come back and bring that same energy and tempo tomorrow. It’s not as the first couple of day. On the third day, we’re going to put some shoulder pads on and guys are going to start getting a little banged up. We made a lot of mistakes, but we made them full speed and that’s what I was worried about”
Cooley said the veteran players that worked out in the spring stepped up on the first day.
“The carry over from the spring was really good,” Cooley said. “We’re a little bit further ahead than I thought with some of those guys. We have to bring these newcomers along because we’re going to need them before the season.”
DSU will continue to prepare for the season at "Camp Delta" and regular practices, which lead up to the Sept. 7 opening game at Mississippi Valley State University.
