Delta Choral Union

The Delta Choral Union will hold a summer concert and ice cream social at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cleveland Country Club.

Ice cream with all the toppings will be served, along with entertainment by the Delta Choral Union and friends, including a small jazz combo. Lighter music will be featured, including traditional love songs, a Hoagie Carmichael medley, spirituals, and a medley of favorites made popular by Peter, Paul and Mary. The choir is directed by ElizaBeth Beckham and accompanied by Ric Grant.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under.

Duplicate Bridge

The Cleveland Duplicate Bridge Club held its regular weekly game June 12.

The winners were:

1st place: Rachel Tate of Cleveland and Don Conger of Malvina

2nd place: Ed Kossman and Jim Steen of Cleveland

William Kethley Dossett graduated during the 124th commencement exercises at Woodberry Forest School on May 25.

Mr. Dossett will attend the University of Mississippi.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William K. Dossett, Sr. of Abita Springs, La.

Founded in 1889, Woodberry Forest School is a highly selective boarding school in Madison County, Va., for 400 ambitious boys in grades nine through twelve from thirty-two states, the District of Columbia, and fifteen other countries.


The following Mississippi University for Women students were recognized on the honors lists.

Cody Cannady of Cleveland was named to the Dean's List for the spring 2013 semester.

To qualify for the Dean's List, the student must be enrolled full-time and have a quality point average of 3.5 to 3.99 on a 4.0 scale.

Lacy Hannaford of Cleveland was named to the President's List for the spring 2013 semester.

To qualify for the President's List, the student must be enrolled full-time and have a perfect 4.0 quality point average.

Founded in 1884 as the first public college for women in the United States, MUW is a tradition-rich university that has educated men for 30 years. U.S. News & World Report's 2013 guide, "America's Best Colleges," placed MUW at No. 18 as one of the top public Southern regional universities. MUW also was ranked No. 15 in Washington Monthly's 2012 rankings of top 100 master's universities.

Southern Miss

The University of Southern Mississippi has released its President’s and Dean’s Lists for the 2013 spring semester.

The President’s List includes full-time students who earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Dean’s List scholars are those with at least a 3.5 grade point average, but less than a 4.0.

Students recognized from the local area include the following:

Dean's List: Catherine Denise Mcknight of Cleveland

Zach Moss

Zachary Michael Moss, a student at Sylva-Bay Academy for the past six years and Mr. SBA Junior High, has received several honors, including the SAT Award, Faculty Award and Headmaster Award.

Moss, is the son of Mike Moss and the former Michaelle James of Pineville. He is the grandson of Wayne and Deana Moss of Cleveland.

Zachary has represented SBA for the past three years at the Academic Betterment Competition. He was voted 7th grade Class Favorite, 8th grade Class President and 9th grade Most Involved and Most School Spirit. In the 8th grade, Zach also won second place in the District Spelling Bee. One of his most beloved awards was when he was presented with the Seth Harris Memorial Award.

Zach has played football since the 4th grade, basketball for one year, and baseball for three years. He ran track for one year and cross-country for two years. For the 2011-2012 school year, he received the Most Improved Player Junior High Football Award. In the 2012-2013 school year, he received the David Bassett Memorial Award and the Best Offensive Lineman Football Award.

In community service, Zach has received awards for hours he has dedicated to both the Seth Harris Childhood Cancer Foundation and the Red Cross.

Zach is a member of First Baptist Church of Bay Springs.
