The win for Cleveland improved its overall record to 10-8 with a region mark of 9-1.
The Lady Wildcats started the game in slow fashion, but a strong fourth inning catapulted Cleveland past Yazoo for the victory. The game was the last region game of the year for Cleveland as the team will enter the 4A State Playoffs this weekend against Itawamba AHS in a best of three first round series. The first game will be in Fulton tonight at 6 p.m., while the second game will be at Cleveland on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. A third game, if necessary, will be played immediately after.
"It felt great to have my team playing again like I know that they can,” CHS head coach Jody Wright said. “We are looking forward to the play in-games coming up this weekend. I feel that we are ready to compete with either team we face.”
Brianna Garner picked up the win in the circle in a complete game shutout for the Lady Wildcats as she struck out eight and gave up five hits on the day.
The teams were knotted at 0-0 until the bottom of the third when Reagan Walker stroked a RBI-single to score Taylor Collins for a 1-0 CHS lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, an RBI single from Megan Skelton brought in Lauren Ashley Collins for a 2-0 Cleveland lead. With the bases loaded, Yazoo walked another run in for a 3-0 CHS lead. On the next at-bat, Walker came up to the plate and socked a triple that scored three runs for a 6-0 CHS lead.
The Lady Wildcats added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 8-0 lead as they walked away with the victory.
Walker led the Lady Wildcats at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs.
Skelton aided Cleveland with two hits and a RBI, followed by Morgan Ray with two hits, Lauren Ashley with a hit and a RBI, Molly Upchurch with a RBI and Taylor Collins and Anna Claire Upchurch with a hit each.
