Delta State sweeps Valdosta on senior night

The Delta State Lady Statesmen and Statesmen basketball teams held senior night Saturday and treated the fans to a great night as they swept the Valdosta State Lady Blazers and Blazers in what was the regular season finale at Walter Siller's Coliseum.

The Lady Statesmen defeated the Lady Blazers 77-63 to improve to 18-8 on the year with a 13-5 mark in the Gulf South Conference.

With the win the Lady Statesmen clinched their second-straight Gulf South Conference regular season title and the top seed at the GSC Tournament.

The Lady Statesmen will play the University of West Florida on Thursday in the first round of the tournament at The Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala.

The Statesmen handled their business in dominating fashion with a strong second half effort for a 77-61 win over the Blazers.

The Statesmen improved to 17-9 on the year with a 9-9 mark in GSC play. The Statesmen will enter next weeks GSC tournament as the fifth seed and play the Blazers again on Friday. A game time will be announced later.

In the women's contest it was Delta State's Chelsey Rhodes who scored a career high 24 points to lead the Lady Statesmen passed the Lady Blazers. Rhodes was also 13-of-13 from the charity stripe in the game.

Seneca Walton scored 22 points with nine rebounds and senior Brittany Roberts scored 15 points in her final game as a Lady Statesmen. Rhandi Ball chipped in with eight points and six steals.

Delta State forced 28 turnovers in the game that led to 33 points from the Lady Statesmen.

In the men's game it was a physical test that the Statesmen passed with flying colors. Senior Terry Leake, Jr. led by example on the floor as he recorded a double –double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Cornell Knight could not be stopped for the Statesmen as he led the scoring with 21 points and nine rebounds. Zelvin Smith, Jr. come off the bench to score 13 points, Mike Weems had 12 points and Jack Madgen scored 10.

The Statesmen shot 52 percent in the first half from the floor while holding Valdosta to just 36 percent. For the Game the Statesmen shot 49.2 percent while Valdosta only shot 36.4 percent. Delta State was solid from the three-point line making 46.2 percent of their shots.

Delta State will begin postseason play on March 7-10 at the 2013 Raymond James Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament in Birmingham, Ala., on the campus of Samford University. The GSC's annual classic will be played inside the Pete Hanna Center, a state-of-the-art 5,000-seat basketball and multi-purpose arena. All games at the GSC Tournament will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network with Matt Jones, J.T. Webb and Herb Brooks on the call.
