A Valentine's Day murder rocked the New Edition subdivision just past Drew city limits, and Sunflower County Sheriff James Haywood is asking for the public's help in solving the case.

According to Haywood, the incident was called in around 10 p.m. and the sheriff's department and Drew Police Department responded to the scene at 22 Swoope Rd. on the corner of Hunter Avenue, considered county land.

"We are asking anyone with information on this case to step up," said Haywood. "This senseless violence has got to stop."

The incident marks the second murder in the same neighborhood within the past six months.

There are currently no identified suspects from the shooting.

The subject, Christopher "Zeke" Barnett, 33, was found dead on the scene by authorities after an unnamed female called and said she discovered his body.

Barnett was eventually taken to Jackson for an autopsy.

The official cause of death has yet to be determined but it appeared Barnett suffered a gunshot to the back of the head.

Barnett's house was ransacked and Haywood said drugs might have been involved in the case.

"Right now we're tracking different leads and asking that anyone with information call the Sunflower County Sheriff's Department at 662-887-2121 or the Drew Police Department at 662-745-2200."

Haywood said Barnett had been missing for a couple days but a missing person report had not been filed.

Drew Police Chief Simon Bush said his department would provide assistance in any way possible with the continuing investigation.

Drew Mayor Jeffery Kilpatrick believes the case will soon be cracked.

"The Drew Police Department and the sheriff are working very hard," said Kilpatrick. "They're going to get to the bottom of this."
