According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the holiday is designated as Washington’s Birthday in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for federal employees.
Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is officially referred to as Washington's Birthday and not as Presidents Day.
Despite the holiday, The Bolivar Commercial will be open regular hours Monday and will publish on Tuesday as always.
Local schools and districts are split in terms of closings.
Cleveland, Benoit, Presbyterian Day School, Bayou Academy and West Bolivar will be in attendance Monday.
Mound Bayou, North Bolivar, Shaw and North Sunflower Academy will be closed.
Some businesses and local government offices will operate on normal schedules.
Cleveland, Shelby and Merigold city halls will run on normal schedules.
Resourceful Environmental Services, Inc. will operate a regular schedule for trash removal all next week.
However, most banks and town hall office will be closed for the holiday.
City and town hall offices for Rosedale, Drew, Gunnison, Pace, Mound Bayou, Ruleville, Shaw and Duncan will be closed Monday and resume regular hours Tuesday.
Information on town hall closings for Benoit, Buelah, Boyle, Renova, Winstonville and Alligator was unavailable at presstime.
Both judicial district courthouses, in Rosedale and Cleveland, will be closed.
Bank of Benoit, Bank of Bolivar County, Cleveland State Bank, Guaranty Bank and Trust, Regions Bank, M&F Bank, Planters Bank and Trust, Southern Bancorp and State Bank and Trust will all be closed on Monday and resume regular hours on Tuesday.
All libraries in the Bolivar County Library System will be closed.
