On Friday night the Lady Jaguars made it two wins in a row when they defeated the Shaw Lady Hawks 41-32 to improve to 2-17 on the year.
"We have really been growing as a team. They seem to really have bought into what I have been telling them all year that we have the biggest post players in the district and I have been telling our post players that they have to want the ball," said Broad Street Head Coach Will Ethel Lane.
That message really has gotten over to Broad Street junior forward Massie Cooper. Cooper has been playing her best ball of the year and in the team's victory over the Lady Hawks, Cooper really asserted herself.
"She is not only a force inside for us, but she is probably our best ball handler. When teams press us she has the ability to get to the middle of the floor and get the ball across and help set things up or get to the basket for the lay up," said Lane.
Cooper led all scorers with 20 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.
Broad Street held a 34-23 in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Hawks fought back into the ball game.
With 4:00 left in the game Shaw's Wynetta Redding scored a basket for a 34-28 game. Cooper responded with a short jump shot with 3:10 left in the game for a 36-28 score.
The game stayed knotted at that score until Shaw's Phatezi Glenn hit a three point shot with 1:16 left on the clock for a 36-31 game.
A free throw from Redding made the score 36-32 with: 43 remaining in the contest. That would be as close as the Lady Hawks would get as Kathy Dumas scored in the paint, Kelvinesha Jefferson hit two free throws and Cooper made one free throw to score the games last five points and secure the victory for the Lady Jaguars.
Dumas joined Cooper with eight points and eight rebounds.
"Right now for us it's all about what they bring to the table. Early in the year teams could just show up and beat us. The girls are competing now and they are playing hard. We have become competitors and not just spectators. I'm proud of all of them and hopefully we can maintain this and carry it into district tournament.
The Region 3-2A Tournament will tip off on Feb. 12 at Broad Street High School. The Lady Jaguars will take on the West Bolivar Lady Eagles to start the tournament.
