The Hawks won their sixth game in a row by defeating the Leland High School Cubs 66-58 in the championship game of the Delta Valley Conference Boys Basketball Tournament at West Bolivar Middle School. The Hawks improved to 14-4.
The Hawks played great team basketball as four players scored in double-figures, while five players pulled down five or more rebounds.
Shaw High head coach Anthony Davis is pleased with the overall make-up of his team.
“Right now, the guys are playing pretty well,” Davis said. “They’re starting to believe in each other. They’re playing great defense and great team basketball. Regardless on any given night, you’ve got any one of those guys that could score 20 points a game. When they’re not scoring, they are still contributing some kind of way.”
Andre Pruitt led the Hawks’ offense with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Octavious Stimage played a great defensive game by pulling down 15 rebounds (14 defensive) while grabbing four steals. He also dished out six assists and finished the game with six points.
Zedric Bass aided the Hawks’ effort with 11 points, eight rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot, followed by Jermarquis Stimage with 16 points, three rebounds and two steals, Ledavious Rice with 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals and Demerrius Williams with five rebounds and two steals.
In girls action, Coahoma County won the DVC title game by defeating Leflore County.
Shaw will return to the basketball court tonight as the team hosts Coffeeville at Tommy Gunn Gymnasium in Shaw.
