The East Side Trojans and Trojanettes gave the fans at the D.M. Smith Gymnasium their money’s worth by sweeping Greenwood in a pair of thrilling basketball games Monday night.

The Trojanettes defeated the Lady Bulldogs 49-48 in the girls game, while the Trojans slid by the Bulldogs 40-39 in the boys game. The Trojanettes improved to 7-2, while the Trojans pushed their record to 6-3.

In the girls game with the Lady Bulldogs leading 44-38, the Trojanettes found new life. LaShyra Cotton, who had went through a cold shooting stretch in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter, found her rhythm. She scored nine of East Side’s final 11 points, including the game winning 3-pointer that put the Trojanettes ahead 49-48 with 15 seconds remaining. The Southern Miss signee finished the night with 22 points and nine rebounds.

“She had to hit a big shot and that’s characteristic of a good player,” Trojanettes head coach Jaboria Walker said about Cotton.

East Side got some solid play from several other players as Carvacier Sanders scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds, Errica Blair scored nine points, Lakeisha Cotton pulled down six rebounds and Jonqueala Harris scored six points.

The win was especially big after East Side came off a 35-28 loss to Gentry on Saturday.

“We had some other players step up as well, “Walker said. “After losing to Gentry, we had to motivate the girls again. They played with heart and didn’t give up."

In the boys game with the score tied 39-39, Perry Henry put the team on top for good as he hit one of two free throws to give the Trojans a 40-39 lead with a second remaining in the game.

East Side played tough defense through out the night. The Trojans’ defense has stepped up its intensity since losing to Shaw 52-43 10 days ago.

“We didn’t play well during that game (against Shaw),” Trojans head coach Leroy Cotton said. “We really kind of had to self evaluate ourselves and focus on the defensive end. In order to be great, we’re going to have to pay attention to our defensive performance.”

Clarence Steward led the Trojans with nine points, followed by Jon Paul Davis with eight points.

Both East Side teams will play in the North Central Athletic Conference Tournament in Ruleville tonight. The Trojanettes will play Broad Street at 4 p.m., while the Trojans will play John F. Kennedy at 5:30 p.m.
