Every holiday season for the last 17 years, thousands of Bolivar County kids have had a brighter Christmas thanks to the Shop With A Cop program.

Cleveland Police Capt. Mike McCain volunteers his time each year to organize the campaign, which operates strictly on donations collected from the public.

“Shop With A Cop began in 1995 and has continued to be a special program for me ever since,” said McCain. "When it all began, I never dreamed it would have gone this far."

McCain and other officers from the Cleveland Police Department collect funding to take as many children as possible on a shopping extravaganza at the Cleveland Walmart.

McCain said the program only works when people find the spirit to give and he's continuously impressed how giving the community becomes.

"It's amazing that even with the economic challenges we face, so many people find it in their hearts to provide for the children who need it most.

"The Bolivar Commercial has run some ads in the past, which have really helped," added McCain. "I'm just so appreciative that people keep on giving through the tough times."

Although no official date has been set for the shopping, McCain said things would start to shape up in early December.

Families will meet with officers at Walmart and the children will choose their items using gift cards.

"I try to get gift cards with a picture of Santa Claus or something similar to that,” chuckled McCain. “They have so much fun picking out what they want, and we get to share some special time together.

“It is really a heart-warming experience to see the kids' faces light up when they get to go shopping for something that they really want.”

Those interested in donating to the program can bring money to the Cleveland Police Department or contact McCain at 843-3611 for more details.

Checks should be made out to the city of Cleveland with a note for 'Shop With a Cop' in the memo.
