Leaves are falling from the trees and the temperature is slowly dropping. Halloween is now a fun-filled memory and Thanksgiving is right around the corner.

To help bring in the holiday season the stores downtown, in conjunction with the Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce, are hosting the annual Cleveland open House, also known as Shop Cleveland.

This year's event will be held Saturday with extended hours of shopping until 7 p.m. and from 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

“Shop Cleveland is a big weekend for the city. This is something we all look forward to,” said Billy Nowell, Cleveland mayor.

This event is free and fun for the whole family. Most of downtown Cleveland’s merchants participate, offering discounts and holiday goodies.

Shop Cleveland not only brings the community together for entertainment, shopping and socializing but it serves another very important function; it helps provide a boost to the local economy.

According to the National Retail Federation the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas make up “anywhere between 20–40 percent of annual sales.”

“Shop Cleveland is important because it helps circulate money within the community. When people shop here, they’re spending money with local merchants and in turn local merchants spend the money here. The money turns over in the community,” said Judson Thigpen, executive vice president of the chamber.

“We appreciate all the patrons who shop Cleveland during the holidays,” said Nowell.
