Former Rosedale Police Officer Tavoris Griffin has reported to the United States Federal Correctional Institution in Forest City, Ark. to serve a term of 18 months in custody, followed by a term of three years of supervised release.

He entered a guilty plea in September to one count of assaulting, resisting and impeding a federal law enforcement officer and one count of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

He was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $773 to the city of Cleveland and was recommended by the court to be considered for placement in the Intensive Drug Treatment Program while incarcerated within the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Griffin, who was an active Rosedale Police officer at the time, was arrested in Cleveland on Oct. 11, 2012.

That afternoon, officers with the Cleveland Police Department were assisting the U.S. Marshal’s Office in the search for a felony fugitive out of Memphis, Tenn., at a particular location on Aloe Street.

As they were approaching their location, a male subject, later identified as Griffin, started running.

During his fleeing, Griffin began throwing things, later identified as narcotics, to the ground.

Officers began pursuit and eventually caught up with Griffin.

"The man fought officers but eventually he was subdued and arrested on Johnson Avenue, a few blocks over,” said Cleveland Police Chief Charles "Buster" Bingham after the incident.

After being taken into custody, Griffin was charged with assault of a law enforcement officer, possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute

The United States decided later to drop the possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute charge as part of Griffins plea agreement.

Senior U.S. District Court Judge Glen H. Davidson presided over the case.

Griffin is scheduled to be released in April 2014.
