Law enforcement officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder of an African American male whose body was found inside his vehicle at the J.Y. Trice Apartment Complex in Rosedale Thursday evening.

According to Dr. J.O. Trice, deputy coroner for Bolivar County, the body of Greg Johnson Jr., 28, of Rosedale was discovered after his vehicle backed into one of the apartment buildings, located on Raymond Street.

The investigation began when the Rosedale Police Department responded to a call at approximately 9:30 p.m. where the caller reported that a vehicle had hit a building.

When officers arrived on the scene they found Johnson with a gunshot wound to the head and immediately called for investigators from the Bolivar County Sheriff Department.

"When we arrived on the scene, we found Johnson's body in the front seat of his vehicle," said Bolivar County Sheriff Kelvin Williams. "Our initial thoughts are that there may have been some kind of confrontation and Johnson had put the car in gear attempting to flee when he was shot. The car likely was put in reverse and rolled into the building."

Trice said that due to the amount of blood at the scene, they were unsure how many bullets struck Johnson but his initial investigation showed a single gunshot wound to the head.

"We are taking the body in for an autopsy today," said Trice by phone this morning. "It was a very late night because the scene was not cleared until after 2 a.m."

Williams said that at this time the department did not a suspect or person of interest in the murder but that the investigation is ongoing.

"We ask that anyone who may have any information as to what happen in Rosedale Thursday night to please come forward and contact the Bolivar County Sheriff's Department at 843-5378 or the Cleveland-Bolivar County chapter of CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)."
