A Facebook page called "Justice for Shelby" has already accumulated over 17,000 supporters for the 20-year-old, who the Mississippi Highway Patrol said was struck by multiple vehicles on U.S. Highway 61, including that of her boyfriend Rodney Shelton Fulgham.
A few of the Facebook page managers, including Nikki Harrison and Sandra Nance, are asking supporters to wear purple in Shelby's honor.
October is recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the color purple and purple ribbons are worn to pay tribute to domestic violence victims.
"Since we all believe firmly this is a domestic violence case, we're wearing purple specifically for Shelby," said Nance. "It's very difficult to remain positive because I have so much anger right now but I have to do something."
Nance said donning purple should not only bring greater awareness to Shelby's case, but also to the millions of domestic violence victims each year.
"If one other young woman in town with a similar situation can hear about what happened to her, then her death is not in vain," said Nance. "Shelby has a huge family that loves her and we're going to fight for her justice."
Harrison said purple will help pay homage to a woman's life that was taken far too soon.
"The purple is honoring her instead of justifying him (Fulgham) and that's all there is to it," said Harrison. "It's honoring her so she's not forgotten — she deserves the honor and deserves to be remembered."
Fellow supporter Amber Lanford wore purple Wednesday.
"I want everybody to go out in purple head to toe," said Lanford. "Justice needs to be served and everyone needs to show support for Shelby because that's what she would have wanted."
Head Hunters Salon in Cleveland was one of several places, which showed for Shelby by offering $5 purple hair extensions with all sales going directly to the Harmon family.
Salon owner Ann Garner said the phone has been ringing constantly with people asking if the extensions are still available.
With over 100 extensions already put in by Wednesday afternoon, Garner said the salon is having a hard time keeping up with the demand.
"We've had to send people out to a bunch of other towns just to purchase more extensions," said Garner.
"It's been a tremendous response from the community," added Garner. "My heart pours out to the families involved, and we're just trying to help in such a time of crisis."
Domestic Violence Awareness Month was created by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in 1987.
The NCADV helps communities and regions across the country culminate in a powerful statement by celebrating the strength of battered women and their children.
According to the NCADV Website, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.
