“We’re expecting between 7,000 to 8,000 Coahoma alumni, supporters, and fans at the Homecoming game with Mississippi Delta Saturday, Oct. 20,” says Dr. Greg Hudson, vice president of student affairs.
Among the celebrity entertainers are Regina Bell and Bobby Rush.
The Comedy Show concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday and the annual Morgan Freeman Scholarship Golf Tournament opens at Tunica National at 9 a.m. Friday.
Entertaining at the posh Presidential Gala Friday night in the Pinnacle is celebrated singer/songwriter Regina Bell who captured a Grammy in 1994 for “A Whole New World,” with Peabo Bryson for Best Pop Performance by a duo or group.
Bell has been nominated for four additional Grammys - in 1991 for “Make It Like It Was,” Best Female R & B vocal performance; in 1994, “A Whole New World,” Record of the Year; in 1999 for “Believe in Me”, Best Traditional R& B vocalist; and in 2002, “This Is Regina” for Best Traditional R & B Vocalist.
In 2001 she performed at the White House during Black History Month for President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.
According to Dr. Hudson, who initially organized the Presidential Gala to benefit the retention of high-risk students – the Coahoma male - to stay in school through graduation, “The program has been successful, and AT&T has just signed on as a new corporate sponsor.”
At the Gala, Greg Hoskins, former Clarksdale Police Chief and a CCC alumnus, will be honored with the President’s Award for his outstanding contributions to Coahoma.
He also will be grand marshal of Saturday’s Homecoming Parade.
In addition to tailgating around James E. Miller Stadium on Saturday, civic clubs and social organizations, troops, cheerleaders, horses, show cars, and others will parade downtown at 10 a.m.
