For the Delta State University Statesmen, Saturday afternoon shapes up to be one of those games, as they will travel to Valdosta, Ga.to play the Valdosta State University Blazers in Gulf South Conference football action.
With their win over the West Georgia Wolves in GSC play last week, the Statesmen (3-3) improved to 1-1 in the GSC. The Blazers (5-2) are coming off a 24-21 win over the North Alabama Lions to push them to 2-1 in the conference. For the year, Valdosta is second with DSU and North Alabama (5-3, 2-2 GSC) battling for the third. North Alabama suffered fell in the standings by losing to the West Georgia Wolves 38-23 on Thursday. The Wolves are currently 3-4 with a 1-3 mark in the GSC.
West Alabama (5-2) is currently leading the GSC with a 2-0 mark in the conference
Delta State head football coach Jamey Chadwell said the Statesmen still have their sights set on making a run at the conference.
“We talked to them after the game (against West Georgia) and every goal and every objective that we had before the season is still out there,” Chadwell said. “I think you’ve seen us play with that type of urgency over the last couple of weeks. We just have to keep playing whether we’re up or behind. We just have to keep playing, and they’ve been doing that.”
This weekend’s schedule could provide a big shake up. West Alabama will host Shorter in Livingston, Ala. on Saturday as well in a key GSC match-up. Shorter is currently 4-3 with a 0-1 mark in the conference. A DSU win coupled with a West Alabama loss would put the Statesmen in a first place tie. A DSU loss however would be a major setback for the team in the conference race.
“When we go down there, it’s elimination from the conference basically,” Chadwell said. “We’ve put ourselves in that situation. We’re not in the best situation, but we still have a chance to do what we want to do. They’re believing right now and they’re hungry. I think they are trying to go out and prove a point. I’m pleased with the effort that they’re showing. We’ve just got to hone in on a few mistakes that we’re making.”
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 2 p.m.
