According to Police Chief Charles "Buster" Bingham, Douglas L. Walker, 25, of Cleveland was apprehended at his place of employment Tuesday afternoon.
The investigation began on Sept. 22 when hospital personnel contacted the police department.
"We received a call from hospital personnel concerning a possible sexual assault on an eight-year-old girl," said Bingham. "DHS was notified and a doctor at the hospital did a series of test. It was determined that the girl had been sexually assaulted."
Bingham said that through the initial investigation the department was able to obtain a warrant for Walker's arrest.
"In our investigation, it was determined that Walker had been having sex with the eight-year-old child," said Bingham. "With the evidence that we had, we were able to obtain an arrest warrant.
"He was taken into custody and made his initial appearance before a judge on Wednesday," Bingham added. "Walker's bail was set at $100,000.
According to Mississippi law, a conviction for statutory rape, involving a defendant over the age of 18 and with a victim under the age of 14, carries a maximum penalty of 20 years to life in prison.
Walker has yet to post bail and is still being held in custody at the Bolivar County Regional Correctional Facility.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
