School districts' scores reviewed

According to the bylaws of the Mississippi Department of Education, every high school student attending state public schools must pass standardized tests in Algebra, Biology, English and U.S. History in order to receive a diplomas.

On Wednesday, the MDE released the preliminary results of last year's group of tests. The data shows how well each student body did on materials that should be known prior to graduation.

At Cleveland High School 93 students were tested in Algebra with an average score of 655.3. Of that number, 81.7 percent passed with 88 percent of that number scoring basic or above and 76 percent scoring proficient or above.

One hundred and forty five Cleveland High students took the Biology test posting an average score of 651.6. Of that number, 77.9 percent of students passed with 89 percent of them scoring basic or above and 59 percent scoring proficient or above.

The average score for the 145 Cleveland High students that took the English test was 649.7. Of that number, 66.9 percent of students passed the test with 72 percent scoring basic or above and 57 percent scoring proficient or above.

Also at Cleveland High, 101 students took the U.S. History test, which is scored on a different scale, and posted an average score of 362.1. Of the 101 students, 94.1 percent passed the test with 89 percent scoring basic or above and 60 percent scoring proficient or above.

At East Side High School, 71 students were tested in Algebra and posted an average score of 651.2. Of that number, 70.4 percent passed with 83 percent of those passing scoring basic or above and 61 percent scoring proficient or above.

Eighty-Four East Side students were tested in Biology and they posted an average score of 646.4. Of the total number, 60.7 percent passed with 75 percent of those scoring basic or above and 42 percent scoring proficient or above.

The average score for the 87 East Side students that took the English test was 645.1. Of those taking the test, only 52.9 percent passed with 61 percent of those scoring basic or above and 40 percent scoring proficient or above.

Also at East Side, 65 students were tested in U.S. History with an average score of 325.9. Of the total number of students tested, 75.4 percent passed with 59 percent of that number scoring basic or above and 25 percent proficient or above.

At D.M. Smith Middle School, 18 students were administered the Algebra test and posted an average score of 649.7. Of that number, 77.8 percent passed with 83 percent of that number scoring basic or above and 56 percent scoring proficient or above.

Twenty-Five students were tested in Algebra at Margaret Green Junior High School and posted an average score of 670.9. Of those tested, 96 percent passed with 96 percent of that number scoring proficient or above.

At Ray Brooks High School in Benoit, 38 students were tested in Algebra. Of that number, 76.3 percent passed with 95 percent scoring basic or above and 61 percent scoring proficient or above. The median score for the Algebra portion of the test was 653.5 in the district.

Thirty-two Ray Brooks' students took the Biology test and the districts average score was 650. Of the number tested, 84.4 percent passed with 91 percent scoring basic or above and 44 percent scoring proficient.

The average score in the district for the English test was 644.9. Of the 30 students tested at Ray Brooks, 53.3 percent passed with 63 percent scoring basic or above and 37 percent scoring proficient or above.

Also at Ray Brooks, 18 students were tested in U.S. History with 93.3 percent passing. Ninety-three percent of that number scored basic or above and 73 percent scored proficient or above.

The West Bolivar School District in Rosedale administered the Algebra test to 64 students. Of that number, 85.9 percent passed with 97 percent scoring basic or above and 69 percent scoring proficient or above. The average score within the district was 653.4.

The average score in the district on the Biology test was 645.6. Sixty-nine students were tested and of that number only 55.1 percent passed. Of those who did pass the test, 80 percent scored basic or above and 29 percent scored proficient or above.

Sixty-Six students were tested in English at West Bolivar with an average score of 641.2. Of that number 39.4 percent passed, while 52 percent scored basic or above and 26 percent scored proficient or above.

Also at West Bolivar, 79 students were tested in U.S. History and returned an average score of 335.3. Of that number, 83.5 percent passed with 77 percent scoring basic or above and 29 percent scoring proficient or above.

The North Bolivar School District in Shelby administered the Algebra test to 59 students with an average score of 657.9. Of those tested, 84.7 percent passed with 90 percent of that number scoring basic or above and 81 percent scoring proficient or above.

Fifty-three students were tested in Biology with an average score of 646.7. Of those tested, 58.5 percent passed the test with 68 percent of that number scoring basic or above and 49 percent scoring proficient or above.

The English test was administered to 47 students in Shelby with an average score of 645.4. Of that number only 46.8 percent passed with 64 percent scoring basic or above and 30 percent scoring proficient or above.

The average score of the U.S. History test administered to 32 students at Shelby Broad Street High School was 347.7. Of the number tested, 90.6 percent passed with 81 percent of that number scoring basic or plus and 50 percent scoring proficient or above.

The Shaw School District tested 53 students in Algebra with an average score of 652.8. Of the number of students taking the test, 77.4 percent passed with 87 percent of that number scoring basic or above and 72 percent scoring proficient or above.

Forty-nine students were administered the Biology test with an average score of 646.9. Of that number, 67.3 percent of students passed the test with 78 percent of that number scoring basic or above and 41 percent scoring proficient or above.

The English test was administered to 24 students at Shaw High School with an average score of 648. Of that number, 75 percent passed with 79 percent of that number scoring basic or above and 50 percent of that number scoring proficient or above.

Also in Shaw, 46 students took the U.S. History test with an average score of 370.9. Of that number, 96 percent passed with 96 percent scoring basic or above and 72 percent scoring proficient or above.

The Mound Bayou School District tested 56 students in Algebra with an average score of 655.3. Of that number, 75 percent passed with 91 percent scoring basic or above and 72 percent scoring proficient or above.

Seventy students took the Biology test and posted an average score of 646.6. Of that number, 64.3 percent passed with 73 percent scoring basic or above and 46 percent scoring proficient or above.

Fifty-seven students took the English test at John F. Kennedy High School and posted an average score of 648.9. Of that number, 61.4 percent passed with 69 percent scoring basic or above and 47 percent scoring proficient or above.

Also in Mound Bayou, 45 students took the U.S. History test and posted an average score of 339.1. Of that number, 86.7 percent passed with 78 percent scoring basic or better and 42 percent scoring proficient or better.
