James Melvin Jr., 67, of Chicago, Ill., died Sunday, December 4, 2011.

Funeral serviced was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2011, at Chapel King in Chicago with Elder Reginald Jones of Light of the World C.O.G.I.C. officiating. Burial followed in Burr Oak Cemetery in Chicago.

Visitation was from 9 a.m. until service time on the day of the funeral.

Born on April 26, 1944, in Chicago, James was the son of the late James Melvin Sr. and Ernestine Harris-Melvin. Five siblings preceded him in death: three brothers, James Earl Melvin, Walter Melvin and F.L. Baker; and two sisters, Ollie McDaniel and Ollie Thompson.

James was educated in Merigold, where he attended Brown School. He was also baptized in Merigold.

James moved to Chicago in 1963 and married Elsie Moore. To this union were born four daughters, Felesa, LaShawn and Kamilah and Samilah, twins.

He was employed at A&P Bakery, Pullman Standard and Fleet Pride Corporation, where he was until his health began to fail.

He married Barbara Williams on September 17, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son Andre Shannon; stepson, Derrick Berry Jr.; daughters, Verdean Parris, Felesa, LaShawn, Samilah and Kamilah; brothers, Eugene Melvin; sisters, Dorothy Brown, Ora Henry, Carol Gaddy, Janice Melvin Betty Bonner, Helen Melvin, Dorothy Lindy; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
