Carl Reid Nelson, 91, formerly of Benoit and Cleveland, died Thursday, July 28, 2011 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Burial services were held at Resthaven Cemetery in Oklahoma City. A memorial service followed at Spring Creek Baptist Church in Oklahoma City on Saturday, July 30, 2011.

He was born in Shelby to Helen Reid and E.B. Nelson on February 24, 1920. He grew up in Benoit and Cleveland where he worked with his father in the family business, before going into the military and serving his country in the Pacific Theater.

After the war, he completed his degrees and served churches in Mississippi, Missouri, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma as a Baptist minister. In addition to pastoring, he and his wife Martha enjoyed leading conferences nationwide for church staff and deacons and their wives based on their books “the Ministering Couple” and “This Call We Share.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Nancy Liner; and brothers, infant John Robert Nelson, Howard Nelson and Elbert Nelson of Cleveland.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Rushing Nelson of Dockery; daughters, Pat James and Rebecca Wood, both of Oklahoma City; sisters, Betsy Craft of Madison and Eleanor Zeigel of Bowling Green, Ky.; and seven grandchildren.
