One citizen is in custody and another recuperating after a shooting over the Christmas weekend in Ruleville.

Brian Nelson Jr. of Drew shot Lawrence Harris of Ruleville in the leg.

“(It happened) the day after Christmas around 3:30 that morning,” said Ruleville Police Chief Ben Grant.

The two Sunflower County citizens, according to Grant, began to fight in the early hours of Dec. 26.

“It started with a verbal altercation uptown when the club closed,” Grant explained. “They met up at Double Quick.”

When the fight moved to the Double Quick, it escalated to a physical fight.

“Nelson pulled out a gun,” said Grant. “He shot it three or four times, hitting Harris in the leg.”

Although Harris sustained injuries during the event, he was not seriously hurt.

“He drove himself to the hospital,” said Grant. “He was released a couple hours later.”

Nelson turned himself in later that day sometime in the afternoon, according to Grant.

“He is being held at the Sunflower County jail,” said Grant.
