The Cleveland High Wildcats forced six turnovers and held Amanda Elzy to 118 yards of total offense in a 63-6 route during Cleveland High's homecoming celebration.
With the win the Wildcats improved to 7-2 overall with a 3-0 mark in Region 3-4A.
"I thought we did well tonight. We came out and executed the game plan. We threw the ball well, we ran the ball well and we played good defense extremely well. It was a good game for us to get ready for Yazoo County," said CHS head coach Kelly Causey.
With all the excitement surrounding the game it was fitting that the night belong to the Cleveland High senior football players. The Wildcats scored nine touchdowns and all of them came by way of senior ball players.
Marshall Boggs scored three, Donivan Henderson and Jason Young scored two each and Cardariius Bell and Di'Traeyvious Russell scored one each.
The game kicked off in true Cleveland High fashion as they drove the ball down the field to score with 7:35 left in the first quarter as Jason Young crossed the end zone on a short run. Nixon Mata added the point after for a 7-0 CHS lead.
On Amanda Elzy's first possession disaster struck as they fumbled the ball and Cleveland's Matt Ray recovered to give the Wildcats the ball on Elzy's 26-yard line.
CHS wasted no time going to work as Vaughnte Dorsey connected with Young for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 5:46 left on the clock in the first. Mata added the kick after for a 14-0 lead.
The Wildcat defense was swarming all night and caused another Elzy fumble that Tommy Harris recovered for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats took possession and pounded the ball down to the three-yard line. On second and goal Coach Causey called a special play for Bell and the team executed as the running back plunged into the end zone for what was one of the most exciting plays of the night for the team and the fans as they filled the stadium with thunderous cheers. Mata added the point after for a 21-0 CHS lead.
In the second quarter the CHS defense showed the offense that they could score as Boggs intercepted a pass and returned it 55-yards for a touchdown with 11:45 left in the second quarter. Mata kicked the point after for a28-0 lead. On Elzy's next possession Dorsey intercepted a pass to give the ball back to CHS. A few plays later Boggs fell in the end zone on a one yard run with 9:19 left in the second. Mata added the point after for a 35-0 CHS lead.
Cleveland forced another fumble and with the ball back the Wildcats handed the ball to Henderson who scored from 10 yards out with 7:27 left in the first half. Mata added the point after for a 42-0 game. Another fumble by the Panthers gave the Wildcats another chance to score and score they did as Dorsey found Russell on a 48-yard touchdown pass with 4:43 left in the first half. Mata added the point after for what proved to be a 49-0 halftime lead.
In the third quarter the Panthers managed to score their first and only points of the game as they connected on a 72-yard pass and a personal foul penalty on CHS at the end of the catch set the Panthers up in a first and goal situation. With 1:50 left in the third Elzy's Denarius Howard scored from one-yard out. The two-point attempt failed for a 49-6 game.
In the fourth quarter Henderson scored on a 28-yard touchdown run and Boggs added a long touchdown run as well. Junior kicker Daniel Guerra added the point after on both touchdowns for a 63-6 game.
Boggs finished with four carries for 69 yards and two touchdowns, Henderson had three carries for 50 yards and two touchdowns, Young had 24 yards on six caries with a touchdown and caught one pass for 32 yards and a touchdown, Bell had one carry for three yards with a touchdown, Russell caught one pass for 48 yards and a touchdown and Dorsey completed 2-of-2 passes for 8o yards with two touchdowns.
Cleveland High will be back in action at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Yazoo County.
