Mississippi Delta Service Corps/AmeriCorps* Vista is sponsoring a pet supply drive for its summer service project.

Donations of pet supplies such as collars, leashes, litter boxes, waste scoopers, shampoos/soaps, brushes, cage linings, perches, toys, treats, and food items are requested.

The drive will end Wednesday and items can be dropped off at Delta State's Center for Community and Economic Development at 1003 West Sunflower Road between 8-10 a.m.

"We chose to do this project because there are several organizations that have drives for school supplies for children, so we decided to do something different. There are many families on limited incomes that have pets and with few resources, the pets are hard to maintain," said Linda Stringfellow, director of Volunteers in Service To America.

"We are going to distribute the supplies to local animal shelters and to programs which provide services to children with special needs who have pets. If agencies in Louisville want to receive some of the supplies, a portion will go there," said Stringfellow. "If Louisville does not want the supplies, all will stay in the Delta."

The annual Summer of SERVICE Project is the first phase of a series of community service projects to move economically disadvantaged children and families out of poverty.

"We have realized that the impacts of community service projects are more effective when they are long-term and the donations change as the community needs change," said Stringfellow.

There are 30 to 45 volunteers who serve two months in the summer who will sort and deliver the pet supplies.

On Wednesday, the summer volunteers will be joined by 20 full time VISTA members for a closing luncheon at Delta State.
