The Trojans played with great intensity on defense and took care of business on offense by defeating the McClain High School Mustangs in a 61-0 blowout in Region 3-3A action. East Side improved to 5-3 with a 2-0 mark in the region, while McClain fell to 3-5 with a 1-1 mark in the region.
The Trojans jumped out to a 30-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
“The guys came out,” East Side head football coach Kendrick Woodard said. “We had a good week of practice, and it carried over on the field. The guys came in and they were focused. On the defensive side of the ball, we did a better job of tackling. I’m excited for those seniors guys as that was their last homecoming.”
East Side’s defense made life difficult for the Mustangs all night. In the first half, Taquille Eatmon blocked a punt and LaCharles Ramsey picked it up and returned it for a touchdown to put up the first points of the game for the Trojans. Caleb Silas and Eric Fulton each recovered fumbles while Jalen Thomas intercepted a pass to aid East Side’s defense in the first half. In the second half, Barron Burns recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown in the last quarter to round out the big plays on defense for East Side.
For the game, Donta Chatman led the Trojans on defense with five solos tackles, followed by Taquille Eatmon with five solo tackles and an assist, Simeon Kimble with four solo tackles and an assist and Jamarcus Burns with two solo tackles and four assists.
East Side’s offense was equally as impressive. Quadre Butler rushed for 156 yards with two touchdowns and three 2-point conversions on just nine carries to lead the Trojans, followed by Thomas with 54 yards rushing and two touchdowns on seven carries and 43 yards passing with a touchdown, Eatmon with 37 rushing yards and a touchdown on three carries, Perry Henry with two 2-point conversions, Leon Green with a 43-yard touchdown catch and a two-point conversion catch and Burns with a PAT kick.
East Side will be back in action on Friday when the team hits the road to Belzoni to play Humphreys County.
