The unit was asked to assist in the search for a 17-year old suspect wanted for questioning in connection with a crime that occurred in Clarksdale just hours before.
"We got a call from the Sunflower authorities at just a little after five Saturday afternoon," said Shane Henderson with Delta K-9 Search and Rescue. "We were informed of a situation where a suspect in an earlier murder had fled the vehicle and fled on foot."
Henderson said that a team was put together and dispatched to the location, which was described as near North Sunflower Academy.
"By the time we arrived on the scene, the sheriff's department had the situation under control," he reported. "We never even had to put the dogs on the chase."
Earlier in the day, at approximately 3 p.m., the Clarksdale Police Department received a tip from an anonymous caller that a crime had taken place at a home located on the corner of Issaquena and First Streets in the downtown area.
Officers were dispatched to the scene and upon their arrival found the robbed, murdered and burning body of 80-year old Ethel Lewis inside the home.
According to the police report, the anonymous caller also told the dispatcher that a suspect was seen fleeing the home and heading toward the Ruleville area in a white Toyota Avalon that was taken from the scene.
The Clarksdale Police put out a BOLO, or a Be On the Look Out, on the vehicle and a Mississippi Highway Patrolman spotted it heading south on Miss. Highway 49.
A pursuit ensued.
However, before a stop could be executed the four passengers in the car, described only as four black males, fled the vehicle and disappeared into the woods of North Sunflower County.
Shortly after deputies with the Sunflower Sheriff 's Department found the suspects inside a nearby residence and they were transported back to Coahoma County.
The suspect was arrested and charged with murder and the other three passengers were released because authorities did not believe that they were involved in the crime.
As a minor, the suspects name is currently unavailable.
