Shelby's clean up project is moving along smoothly and according to mayor Dan Harris it would not be possible without the help of the community.

Shelby's Women United, a community organization, has donated $5,000 to aid with the clean up project.

Harris said the money will be used to purchase equipment and other materials that are needed to complete the project.

"We were so blessed to have received such a generous donation," said Harris.

"During the clean up project, we have had to cut down a large amount of trees – we have been using small chain saws but some of them have been burning out. We are definitely going to use some of the money to purchase bigger and better chain saws," he added.

Harris said he considers Shelby's Women United organization to be a jewel and a wonderful asset to the city.

"This organization has been helping out in the community for a long time and I think that it is amazing that all of the work that they do for the city is strictly volunteer," added Harris.

"Without the help from the organization, we would not be able to move forward with the clean up project and that is why we are so grateful," he continued.

According to Harris, in order to proceed with the project the city must also purchase dumpsters.

"We have been removing condemned burned structures. We cannot place the materials from those structures in the same piles as the other rubbish – we need separate dumpsters for burned debris," he added.

Although the citizens have been aiding extensively in the project, Harris said the county has been very instrumental in the project as well.

"A project like this requires the assistance from several entities. We have been blessed to have the help of the county," continued Harris.

He also said that he is calling out to the citizens of Shelby to continue aiding in the project.

"It is truly going to take the help of the entire community to make this project a success. I would like to encourage members of the community to help enhance the wonderful city of Shelby," said Harris.

The women of Shelby plan to continue their efforts in making the community and the lives of those in the community of a better place to live and prosper.

Proceeds from the Shelby Thrift Store will also be used in support of the clean up project.
